2019 Brigada Eskwela

This week’s Brigada Eskwela in Dagat-Dagatan Elementary School had a rousing start despite the summer heat.   Navotas Mayor and Congressman-elect John Rey Tiangco led volunteers who were eager to lend a hand in preparing the classrooms for the upcoming opening of the school year.  The volunteers came from the DepEd, the School Governing Council, some private sector partners, PTA, the teaching staff led by Principal Florie Quijano, students, USAID officials and the Synergeia team.  They readily dirtied their hands with repainting school desks, sweeping and mopping floors, and dusting the books and learning materials.  Mayor John Rey worked on “perfectly” painting a school desk.

The USAID EdGE Program supported the Brigada Eskwela through donations of cleaning and painting supplies.  The USAID donated books and student kits.  Museo Pambata also donated books.

USAID Resident Legal Officer Maram Talaat gave a short speech during the opening program, and led the read-along activity for 60 children from Grades 1-3.  Yes, while the elders were cleaning, some children were gathered in the lobby to listen to “The Little Red Hen.”  They had fun drawing the characters of the story.

We quote Hebrew 13:16 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices, God is pleased.”   It was a beautiful morning of doing good for others.

Coffee For A Cause

2Success, Inc., an IT company with some 200 employees, used to offer
free coffee to its employees to make them always awake and alert.  The
company eventually conceptualized a fund-raising activity with the aim
of developing the spirit of volunteerism among its employees.  They
launched their “coffee for a cause” project wherein coffee sales go to a
worthy cause.  From December 2017 to January 2019, proceeds from
2Success’ “coffee for a cause” project will benefit a school in San
Gabriel, La Union.  Initially, they will be donating a LCD projector to
a chosen school.  Ms. Camille Ocai, head of Administrative Group, met
with Synergeia to plan their visit to San Gabriel and to see how else
can they assist the school children in San Gabriel.

Spirit of Volunteerism Comes Alive in Bohol SGCs

The spirit of volunteerism in the community comes alive with the presence of SGCs.  Since it is composed of representatives of different sectors in the community, beyond parents and teachers, each one connects to the other, the PTAs and the SGCs, the barangay council, the alumni, the youth sector, religious-oriented groups, etc. Ultimately, forces and efforts gather together to produce a sum greater than its parts.  This is the cutting edge of Synergeia’s approach to education reform.

Volunteerism is a hallmark of the School Governing Council governance structure.  As expressed by one active SGC member: “Volunteering connects me to others.  It is good for my mind and body.  It also helps me build upon skills I already have and use these to benefit the greater community.  As a volunteer, I derive great pleasure in helping others but they also help me to
become a better person.”

A chairperson of an SGC remarked that she did not realize the enormous responsibilities placed on schools but now she understands why Republic Act 9155, Governance of Basic Education Act, provides among others, for the parents and the community to be actively involved in the education of our children.

In one school, the young people who are in high school and college volunteer on weekends and read to the children.  In another school, SGC officers conduct a reading activity for slow and non-readers during lunch break for 30 minutes. The officers also partner with the school teachers in managing a milk and biscuits feeding activity supported by an individual donor.

We look forward with robust optimism that the SGCs supported through the years will continue to play a vital role in partnering with our schools to further enhance the quality of public education.  Through SGCs, may every child be given the chance to develop the love of learning in a safe and secure environment, and be guided and molded by competent and caring teachers and the wider school community towards a holistic child development.

Two of the 301 functional SGCs across the country:  the SGC of Jandig ES and the SGC of Sta. Cruz ES, both of Maribojoc, Bohol.
