MENDEZ GEARS UP FOR AN EDUCATION PROGRAM

If the NAT scores will be taken as an indicator, the public school children
from Mendez, Cavite is performing very well with an average of 84.3 percent.
However, Vice Mayor Vida explained that the very satisfactory performance of
the children may be attributed to the regular conduct of review sessions
during Saturdays. The review sessions were intended to prepare the children
in the national examinations. Thus, it cannot be ascertained if the children
are really learning well.

At the May 20 planning workshop conducted by Synergeia, the community
decided that they would like to focus on addressing (1) the lack of study
habits among public school children; (2) vices such as online games and
arcade shops; (3) the problem of slow and non-readers; (4) the
rationalization of pre-schools which are run by three different agencies,
and (5) the provision of information technology to schools. They would
like to empower the youth leaders of their community and have them engage
their peers in activities which stimulate thinking and creativity such as
quiz bees, arts and crafts. In addition, they intend to hold capability
building seminars for elementary and high school parents.
